Healing begins when you start caring for yourself, too.

Family Care Program

A Support Program For Individuals Impacted By A Loved One’s Substance Use

The Family Care Program is a structured support program designed for individuals who have been emotionally impacted by a loved one’s addiction, substance use, or unhealthy behaviours.
This program provides practical tools, emotional support, education, and guidance for individuals who may be feeling overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, stuck in unhealthy family dynamics, or struggling to regain balance in their own lives.
Grounded in evidence-based approaches, SMART Recovery principles, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and boundary-setting frameworks, the Family Care Program helps participants move from crisis-driven reactions toward healthier, more empowered ways of living.
The goal of this program is not changing the loved one — it is helping participants strengthen boundaries, improve emotional regulation, reduce enabling behaviours, and begin rebuilding their own sense of stability, identity, and well-being.
Whether someone’s loved one is in active addiction, recovery, relapse, or treatment, this program focuses on helping individuals learn how to support others without losing themselves in the process.

  • Throughout the program, participants work through core family support and emotional wellness topics including:

    • Understanding addiction and its impact on family systems

    • Identifying patterns of rescuing, fixing, enabling, or over-responsibility

    • Learning healthy boundaries and boundary-setting skills

    • Strengthening assertive communication and confidence

    • Managing stress, anxiety, guilt, and emotional burnout

    • Learning detachment with compassion and emotional balance

    • Processing grief, disappointment, and loss

    • Improving emotional regulation and coping strategies

    • Rebuilding self-worth, independence, and personal identity

    • Creating healthier relationship dynamics and long-term stability

The program combines education, reflection work, practical exercises, emotional processing, and guided discussion to help participants apply healthier patterns in everyday life and relationships.

  • The Family Care Program is built around compassion, empowerment, practical tools, and realistic progress.

This is not a program focused on blame, shame, or forcing individuals to “walk away” from loved ones. Participants are encouraged to explore unhealthy dynamics while learning practical strategies for protecting their own emotional well-being and creating healthier boundaries.

The focus is on helping individuals move away from constant crisis management, emotional exhaustion, and over-responsibility while building confidence, self-respect, and healthier coping patterns.

Each participant’s situation is different, which is why the program is designed to provide personalized support while helping individuals create sustainable change that feels realistic and manageable.

  • This program may be a good fit for individuals who:

    • Have a loved one struggling with addiction or substance use

    • Feel emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed, or burnt out

Recovery Is An Investment In Yourself

Supporting someone struggling with addiction can be emotionally exhausting, overwhelming, and all-consuming. Over time, many individuals begin neglecting their own needs, emotional well-being, boundaries, and sense of identity while trying to help the person they love.

The Family Care Program was designed to help individuals reconnect with themselves, strengthen healthy boundaries, develop practical coping strategies, and begin creating healthier patterns within their relationships and daily lives.

Investing in your own healing is not selfish — it is necessary. When you begin prioritizing your emotional health, self-respect, and stability, you create a stronger foundation for both yourself and the relationships around you.

At Atlantic Recovery, we understand that addiction impacts more than the individual struggling — it also affects the people who love and support them.

The Family Care Program was created to help individuals regain balance, strengthen boundaries, rebuild emotional stability, and begin prioritizing their own well-being without guilt or shame.

You did not cause another person’s addiction, and you cannot control their choices. But you can learn healthier ways to respond, protect your peace, and begin rebuilding your own life one step at a time.
